What are Direct Thermal Labels?

Direct thermal labels do not need ink, toner, or printer ribbons [link]. Direct thermal label printers use heat from the print head to cause a chemical reaction on the direct thermal label that causes it to darken. Because of this, you can only print in black and white. The direct thermal labels themselves do however come in many different colors.

A drawback to direct thermal labels is that they are not scratch resistant and will darken over time when exposed to light over a long duration or exposed to excessive heat. Direct thermal labels are best for short term applications like receipts, name tags, shipping labels, visitor passes, etc. The typical life span of a direct thermal label is around 6 months.

Direct Thermal Label Adhesives

There are several different types of adhesives to be used for different applications. Permanent and all temperature adhesives are the most widely used.

Permanent adhesive service temperature is -4 degrees to 176 degrees Fahrenheit. Application temperature (putting the label on the product) is 32 degrees or higher.

An all temperature adhesive service temperature is 65 degrees to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Application temperature can be as low as -20º Fahrenheit so an all temperature adhesive or freezer grade adhesive which accommodates for condensation can be applied in a freezer environment.
